Living under a fascist regime, Pavese's only hope, fed also by American movies, for a genuine freedom and fullfilment was to go there. Unfortunately he never succeeded and for the most part of his life he just tried to prepare for that by taking a great interest in American literature and translating into Italian several novelists and poets.
